Links that start with an answer
Add ?tq= or ?q1= to a link so the quiz opens with answers already picked: for banners, image tiles, ads and emails.
#What they do
A link to the page with your quiz can pick answers for the shopper. The quiz opens with those answers chosen and carries on from the first question still open. A banner that says “Shop for oily skin” can open your skin quiz with Oily already picked, so the shopper starts one step in.
#Get the links
In the quiz editor, open Put it on your store and click Links that start with an answer (it’s closed at first). It says “For banners and ads: add one to the end of the link to your quiz’s page, and the quiz opens with “…” already answered.”, naming your first question. Each answer to that question is listed with its link part, like ?tq=a-7k2m9p, and a Copy button. Answer IDs are short codes; copy them rather than typing them.
- Click Copy next to the answer you want.
- Add it to the address of the page with your quiz:
/pages/skin-quiz?tq=a-7k2m9p, or/?tq=a-7k2m9pfor a quiz on your home page. - If the address already has a
?, join with&instead:/pages/skin-quiz?utm_source=instagram&tq=a-7k2m9p.
#Links by position: ?q1=2
?q1=2 picks the 2nd answer of question 1. Question numbers follow the order in the editor’s steps list, and answer numbers the order of the answers. Add more questions with &: ?q1=2&q2=1. It’s the same style some other quiz apps use.
The dialog doesn’t list these links: write them yourself. It only lists ?tq= links for the first question, so this form is handy for later questions.
#Several answers and questions
Separate values with commas:
?tq=a-7k2m9p,a-x4c8d1picks two answers, in one question that allows several, or in two different questions.?q2=1,3picks the 1st and 3rd answers of question 2, if it allows two or more.?q1=2&q2=1,3combines both.
#How the quiz walks forward
Starting from the first question, the quiz takes each picked answer as long as it fits the question the shopper is on, and follows your branching as it goes. A multi-choice question needs at least one pick and no more than its maximum. The quiz stops at the first question without a fitting pick and shows it. If every question on the path is answered, the shopper goes on to the email step (if it’s on) and then the results.
- The welcome screen is skipped.
- Picks for questions the shopper’s path doesn’t reach are ignored, for example after a branch.
- Unknown IDs and numbers are ignored. If nothing fits, the quiz starts as usual.
- A link that picks answers always starts a fresh run, even if the shopper had progress in that tab.
- The link’s answers are removed from the address once used, so a reload or Retake the quiz starts from what the shopper did, not from the link.
#Where to use them
| Place | Example |
|---|---|
| Home page image tiles | A skincare store shows one tile per skin type, each linking to its quiz page with that answer picked. |
| Collection banners | A coffee shop’s espresso collection links to /pages/coffee-quiz?q1=2, where “Espresso” is the 2nd answer of question 1. |
| Ads | A pet store runs one ad for dog owners and one for cat owners, each opening the quiz with that pet picked. |
| Emails | A newsletter about puppies links to the quiz with “Puppy” already answered. |
They work with the popup too: add the answer to a link that opens it, like /?tq=a-7k2m9p#teacup.
Add utm_source to the same link and the quiz’s Sources analytics shows where those shoppers came from.
#How they’re counted
A link that picks at least one answer counts as a start right away, with its answers, before the shopper taps anything. It shows in Started, Where shoppers leave and What shoppers answer like any other start. Your own visits with ?teacup_test=1 aren’t counted. See How counting works.
IDs and positions are the same in every language, so one link works for all your shoppers.
