Branching: skip questions and jump ahead
Send shoppers to different questions based on their answers, with a jump on an answer or after a question: how jumps combine, what they can’t do, and how the progress line stays honest.
#When to branch
By default, every shopper answers every question, top to bottom. Branching lets an answer, or a whole question, send shoppers somewhere else: past questions that don’t apply to them, or straight to the results.
- Pet store: “Dog or cat?” Dog owners go on to “How big is your dog?”, cat owners jump to “How old is your cat?”.
- Gift shop: “Who is it for?” → “Myself” skips the occasion question.
- Skincare: “What are you looking for?” → “Just a sunscreen” goes straight to the results.
#A jump on an answer: Then
- Open the question and click Choose products (or Edit products) under the answer. In a quiz with result pages: Choose result or Edit result.
- In a products quiz, click More options at the bottom of the dialog. With result pages, Then is already there.
- Under Then, pick The next question, a question such as Go to 4. How old is your cat?, or Show the results.
- Click Done.
“Send shoppers who pick this answer to a different question, or straight to their results.” Answer jumps exist only on questions where shoppers pick one answer. The answer gets a chip like Then: question 4 or Then: results, and the question’s header on the canvas shows Branches. In a products quiz, a closed More options shows the jump in a line under it, such as “Then: question 4”.
A quiz drafted by AI can already have some of these jumps, always to a later question or to the results. Change or remove them like your own.
#A jump after a question: After this question
- Open the question and click More options.
- Under After this question, pick Continue to the next question, a question such as Go to 5. Wet or dry food?, or Show the results. On the last question, the first choice reads Show the results.
This sends everyone who answers the question to the same place, whatever they picked. It’s the only way to branch from a question with several answers.
Which one wins
| The shopper’s answer… | They go to |
|---|---|
| has its own Then | Where Then says. |
| has no Then, and the question has After this question | Where After this question says. |
| has neither | The next question in the list, or the results after the last one. |
When some answers have their own Then, After this question reminds you: “Answers with their own ‘Then’ go there instead.”
Example: dog or cat
| # | Question | Branching |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dog or cat? | Dog: The next question. Cat: Then → Go to 3. How old is your cat? |
| 2 | How big is your dog? | After this question → Go to 4. Wet or dry food? |
| 3 | How old is your cat? | Continue |
| 4 | Wet or dry food? | Continue |
Dog owners answer 1, 2 and 4. Cat owners answer 1, 3 and 4. Without the jump after question 2, dog owners would also get the cat question.
#One answer vs several answers
- One-answer questions can jump per answer (Then), after the question (After this question), or both.
- Several-answers questions can only use After this question. Switching a question to several answers removes its answers’ jumps.
- If an answer on a several-answers question still has a jump, Check every answer shows a red error: “… jumps to another question, but … allows several answers. Set the jump on the question instead.”
#Jumps go forward
A jump back to an earlier question can send shoppers round in circles. Check every answer catches this as an error that stops Publish: “The quiz can loop back to ‘Dog or cat?’.” Fix it by pointing the jump further down the list.
- A question no answer leads to gets a warning: “No answer leads to ‘How old is your cat?’.” Check the jumps above it, or delete it.
- Deleting a question resets every jump that pointed to it to the default.
- Jumps point to a question, not a position, so they survive reordering. But continuing always means the next question in the list, so moving questions can change paths. Look at Check every answer after reordering.
#The quiz always starts at question 1
There’s no setting for a different first question: shoppers start at the top of the list, after the welcome screen. To start with another question, drag it to the top. To start some shoppers partway, for example from a banner, use a link that answers the first questions for them: see Answer links.
#How the progress stays honest
Above each question shoppers see “2 of 4” and a progress line. The total is the longest path still possible from where they are, so the quiz never promises fewer questions than a shopper might get.
- In the dog-or-cat example, shoppers start at “1 of 3”, not “1 of 4”: nobody answers more than three questions.
- When an answer rules out longer paths, the total drops; it never goes up. A shopper who picks “Just a sunscreen” on question 1 goes from “1 of 5” straight to the results.
- Up to 12 questions, the line is drawn in segments, one per question; longer quizzes get a single bar.
- The welcome screen’s question count and time estimate also use the longest path.
In analytics, questions only some paths reach are marked Some paths. See Reading your analytics.
