When quizzes pause

Why quizzes disappear from your store on the Free plan after 110 completed quizzes in a month, what you and your shoppers see, and how to bring them back.

#When quizzes pause

The Free plan includes 100 completed quizzes per calendar month, with a little grace. When the 110th shopper completes a quiz, all your quizzes pause until the 1st of the next month. The month is counted in UTC.

  • Paid plans never pause: past their limit, they keep running and Shopify bills usage charges, up to a cap. See Plans and pricing.
  • The one exception is a paid plan approved before usage charges existed. It pauses at 110% of its limit, until you approve usage charges with Approve in Shopify on Plans: see Free trial and changing plans.

What counts as a completed quiz, and what never does (like your own test runs), is in Plans and pricing.

#What shoppers see

Nothing. While quizzes are paused, every Teacup Quiz section, button and popup on your store shows nothing, and #teacup links open nothing. The rest of your store works as usual, and shoppers see no message about the pause.

In the theme editor, each quiz block, and the popup in a small box at the bottom right, says “This quiz is paused: your plan’s completed quizzes for this month are used up. Upgrade in the Teacup Quiz app to show it again.”

#The warnings you get

WhenEmailIn the app
80 completed quizzes“{store}: 80% of this month’s quizzes used”Home: “80 of 100 completed quizzes this month”, with “Quizzes pause a little past your Free plan’s limit until next month. Upgrade to keep them running.”
100 completed quizzes“{store}: this month’s 100 quizzes are used”, saying quizzes keep running a little longerThe same Home banner, and a red meter on Plans
110: paused“{store}: your quizzes are paused until November 1”Home: “Your quizzes are paused until next month”. Plans: “Your quizzes are paused”, with the date they come back

Each email goes once a month, to the address under Settings → Send to, or your store’s email. They can’t be turned off, so the right person always hears about a pause. Each has a See plans button.

#Bring your quizzes back

Right away: upgrade

  1. Open Plans, or click See plans in the banner or the email.
  2. Click Start 14-day free trial or Upgrade to … on a paid plan.
  3. Approve the plan on Shopify’s page.
  4. Back on Plans, your quizzes show again. On a paid plan they never pause.

Or wait for the 1st

Quizzes show again by themselves when the new month begins, with the count back at 0. There’s nothing to do. Because the month is counted in UTC, depending on your store’s time zone they can come back a few hours before or after midnight on the 1st.

#Calendar month or billing cycle?

Teacup Quiz counts some things per calendar month and others per Shopify billing cycle:

WhatCounts per
Pausing (Free, and older paid plans without usage charges)Calendar month, UTC. Starts over on the 1st at 00:00 UTC.
Usage emails at 80% and 100%Calendar month, UTC
AI-drafted quizzes on paid plansCalendar month, UTC. Free’s one never starts over.
Usage charges and their capShopify’s 30-day billing cycle
The Home banner and the Plans meter on Starter and GrowthThe billing cycle

So on Starter or Growth, the 80% and 100% emails can arrive on different days from the Home banner: the emails count the calendar month and the banner the billing cycle. Neither means a pause on those plans.

#Cap reached on Starter or Growth

When usage charges reach the cap for the billing cycle ($50 on Starter, $120 on Growth), you get an email, “You’ve reached this billing cycle’s cap”, and Plans shows “Usage charges reached this cycle’s $50 cap”.

Nothing pauses. Quizzes keep running at no extra charge until your next bill, when a new cycle starts the count over.

#Avoiding a pause

  • Watch the meter on Plans and the Home banner from 80 completed quizzes.
  • Expecting a sale, a newsletter or an ad campaign? Upgrade before it starts, so shoppers never find the quiz gone.
  • Test with Open your store or a ?teacup_test=1 link: your own runs never count.
