Languages and translations

Show your quiz in every language your store sells in: the built-in button texts, translating with AI or by hand, what the badges mean, daily limits and when translations go live.

#How shoppers get their language

Shoppers see the quiz in the language they browse your store in: the one they pick in your theme’s language selector, or the one in your store’s address (like /fr). The quiz follows your store; there’s nothing for shoppers to choose.

Part of the quizWhere its language comes from
Texts you wrote: questions, answers, headingsYour translation for that language. Texts without one show in your store’s main language.
Texts Teacup Quiz writes: Continue, Add to cart, Retake the quizBuilt in, in 14 languages (below).
Product names, options and pricesYour store, the way shoppers see it there. Products you translated in Shopify show translated.

A language you haven’t translated shows the quiz in your main language, with the built-in texts in the shopper’s language when it’s one of the 14.

#Built-in texts in 14 languages

Everything the quiz says that you didn’t write, like Start the quiz, Continue, Show my results, Add all to cart and Retake the quiz, comes translated into 14 languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Spanish and Swedish.

In any other language, these texts show in English. Your welcome screen’s button is yours to write and translate, so it can always match the shopper’s language.

#Add languages in Shopify first

The editor’s Languages step (under Look) lists the languages published on your store. A store with one language sees Your store only sells in English. Add languages in Settings → Languages, then translate the quiz here.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Languages, add the language and publish it.
  2. In the quiz editor, open Languages. Reload the page if the new language isn’t listed yet.
  3. Translate it (below), then publish the quiz.

#Translate with AI

Each language has a card with a badge and buttons.

  1. Click Translate with AI. While it works, the card says Translating 42 texts. This takes about half a minute.
  2. A message confirms, for example Translated into French. Save or publish to keep it. Translating doesn’t save the quiz.
  3. Click Edit to read through the translations and change any of them.
  4. Publish the quiz. Translations reach your store only when you publish.

After you change the quiz, the card counts the texts that are new or changed. Update with AI translates only those, so the rest, including texts you edited by hand, stay as they are.

#Edit or translate by hand

Edit opens a list of every text shoppers read: the original as the label, your translation in the field. A translation whose original changed since says The original changed since this was translated. Clear a field to drop that translation; shoppers then see the original there. Done closes the list.

Translate by hand appears when AI translation isn’t available. It opens the same list, empty, for you to fill in.

When AI translation is available, a language’s first translation is made with Translate with AI; from then on, Edit lets you rewrite any text.

Remove French (at the bottom of the Edit list, named after the language) takes the language off the quiz. Once you publish, shoppers browsing in it see your main language.

#What the badges mean

BadgeMeaningWhat shoppers in that language see
Not translatedNothing translated yet.Your main language.
3 texts to updateSome texts are new, or changed since they were translated. The older translation where there is one, your main language for new texts, until you update and publish.
Up to dateEvery text is translated. The translation, once you’ve published it.

#What’s translated and what’s shared

Each language has its own: the quiz name; the welcome heading, text and button; each question, its Why you ask line and its short label; each answer’s label, description and Why these products fit (Good for) text; the email step’s heading, text and marketing checkbox; routine step names; and each result page’s name, heading, text and button.

Every language shares: matching rules, products, design, pictures, branching, the email step’s settings and the bundle discount. Change them once and every language follows when you publish. Links that start with an answer work in every language too.

#Limits

FreeStarter, Growth and Plus
AI translations per day320
  • Each Translate with AI or Update with AI that translates something counts as one. A run with nothing new (Nothing new to translate into French.) and a run that fails don’t count. Days start at 00:00 UTC.
  • Development stores get the Free plan’s 3 a day.
  • Texts longer than 500 characters are skipped. The message says how many and asks you to translate them with Edit.
  • One run translates up to 400 texts. If there are more, the message says how many didn’t fit in one go: save, then translate again.

When today’s translations are used up: You’ve used today’s 3 AI translations. Translate again tomorrow, or edit the texts by hand. If AI translation is off: AI translation isn’t available right now. You can still translate the texts by hand. See AI allowances.
