When the quiz doesn’t show

A checklist for a quiz that’s missing from your store or shows the wrong quiz, with the notes the theme editor shows and what each one means.

#Start here

Shoppers see a quiz when three things are true: the quiz is published, a Teacup Quiz block saved on your live theme shows it, and your quizzes aren’t paused. Almost every missing quiz comes down to one of these. Work through the checks below in order.

Open the page in Shopify’s theme editor as well. Where a block has nothing to show, it says why there. Shoppers never see these notes: for them the block is simply empty.

#Notes in the theme editor

The noteWhat it meansWhat to do
Teacup Quiz: publish a quiz in the Teacup Quiz app to show it here. The block’s Quiz ID is empty and you have no main quiz, because no quiz is published.Publish a quiz. Your first published quiz becomes your main quiz.
Teacup Quiz: no published quiz with the ID "gift-finder". Check the ID in the Teacup Quiz app, or leave it empty to show your main quiz.No published quiz has that ID: a typo, or the quiz was unpublished or deleted. Shoppers see nothing there, not your main quiz.Publish that quiz, copy its ID again from Put it on your store, or leave Quiz ID empty to show your main quiz.
This quiz is paused: your plan’s completed quizzes for this month are used up. Upgrade in the Teacup Quiz app to show it again.Your store has gone past this month’s completed quizzes on its plan.Upgrade on the Plans page, or wait for the new month (check 5 below).

#1. Is the quiz published?

In the quiz editor, the badge above the builder should say Published. Draft means shoppers can’t see the quiz: click Publish. Unpublished changes means shoppers still see the version you last published: click Publish changes to show your edits. See Publishing and managing quizzes.

#2. Is the block on your live theme, and saved?

  • The buttons in Put it on your store add the block in the theme editor, but nothing reaches your store until you click Save there.
  • Check you edited your live theme. A block added to another theme shows only once you publish that theme. A theme preview shows the quiz, but it isn’t what shoppers see.
  • Check the template. Another page adds the quiz to your default page template, so a page that uses another template won’t show it. Product pages use your product templates.

While the setup guide is on Home (until shoppers start taking quizzes), its Try it like a shopper step lists where your live theme shows a quiz, like “On your store: Home page, Popup.” If the page you expect isn’t there, the block isn’t saved on your live theme.

#3. Is it showing the right quiz?

A block with an empty Quiz ID shows your main quiz. A block with a Quiz ID shows that quiz, as long as it’s published.

Unpublishing or deleting your main quiz makes another live quiz the main quiz, so blocks without a Quiz ID change quiz too. To choose, open the quiz you want and click Make main quiz.

#5. Are your quizzes paused?

On Free, quizzes pause once shoppers complete 110 quizzes in a calendar month (UTC). Older paid subscriptions without usage charges pause at 110% of their plan. While paused, every block and the popup show nothing to shoppers, and Home says Your quizzes are paused until next month.

Upgrade to show them again right away, or they come back by themselves on the 1st. See When quizzes pause.

#6. Still nothing?

  • Reload the page while skipping your browser’s cache, or open it in a private window: you may be looking at a copy from before you saved.
  • If you can’t add the block to a section at all, your theme may not support app blocks there. The popup and #teacup links still work.
  • If the quiz shows but looks wrong, for example invisible buttons on a dark page, see Design.

Then take the quiz with the test link so your own visits aren’t counted: Testing the quiz on your store.
