Publishing and managing quizzes

Publish a quiz and its changes, what can stop a publish, how your main quiz works, and what Unpublish, Duplicate and Delete do.

#The quiz you edit and the quiz shoppers see

Every quiz has two versions: the one you edit in Teacup Quiz, and the live one shoppers see. Editing, saving and undoing never change what shoppers see. Publishing copies what’s in the editor to your store.

There’s no autosave. As soon as you change something, Shopify’s save bar appears at the top of the page: save there to keep your edits without publishing them, or discard them to go back to the last saved version. Publishing saves too.

If the quiz was saved somewhere else meanwhile, for example in another browser tab, you see This quiz was changed somewhere else (another tab?). Reload the page to get the latest version. Reloading drops the edits you haven’t saved in this tab, so copy anything you need first.

#Publish, Publish changes and Publish again

The main button at the top of the editor changes with the quiz’s state:

ButtonWhen you see itWhat it does
PublishThe quiz has never been published.Saves it and puts it on your store for the first time.
Publish changesIt’s live and you’ve changed it since, saved or not.Saves it and replaces the live version.
Publish againIt’s live and nothing has changed.Publishes the same quiz again, refreshing its products and the bundle discount.

After a publish you see Quiz published to your store. The status above the builder then reads, for example, “Published Oct 9, 3:41 PM with 48 products.”: the number is how many products the quiz can recommend.

#What can stop a publish

Before it publishes, Teacup Quiz checks the quiz’s structure. If something would break it, nothing is published and you see Fix this before publishing: followed by the problem, or, for several, Fix 3 problems before publishing (see “Check every answer”). The most common ones:

  • The quiz has no questions., or a question has no answers.
  • A question or answer leads to a question that no longer exists, or the quiz can loop back to an earlier question.
  • A rule points to a deleted collection or product, has an empty tag, product type or brand (vendor), or has a price range that isn’t complete.
  • No products can be recommended. None of your products is active, in stock, on the Online Store and inside the quiz’s products.
  • A result-page quiz has no result page, or a landing page that isn’t a page on your store or an https:// address.
  • The bundle discount isn’t a whole percent from 1 to 50.

When some answers lead to no products

Ways to answer that end with no products don’t stop a publish, even though the toolbar counts them in N to fix before publishing. Instead, when Check every answer has found some, Publish, Publish changes and Publish again first open a dialog, Some shoppers would get no products: “3 ways of answering end with no products: shoppers who answer like that see ‘We couldn’t find a match right now’. ‘Check every answer’ shows which answers lead there and how to fix it.”

  • Show me opens Check every answer, with the answers that lead there and how to fix them.
  • Publish anyway publishes the quiz as it is. Shoppers on those paths see the no-match message.

#Your first publish

Publishing doesn’t place the quiz on any page by itself. The first time you publish a quiz, Teacup Quiz says Quiz published. Now put it on your store. and opens Put it on your store, which adds it to your theme in a few clicks: see Putting the quiz on your store.

You can open that dialog again any time with Put it on your store in the quiz’s status area.

#Your main quiz

The main quiz is the one a Teacup Quiz block, button or popup shows when its Quiz ID is empty. It has a Main quiz badge in the editor and on Home.

  • Your first published quiz becomes the main quiz by itself.
  • To change it, open another published quiz and click Make main quiz, in the status area or in Put it on your store. You see This is now your main quiz, and every block without a Quiz ID shows it from then on.
  • Unpublishing or deleting the main quiz hands the role to another live quiz, or leaves you without one if none is live.

#Product changes reach live quizzes by themselves

You don’t need to republish when your products change. When you add, edit or delete products or collections, live quizzes pick up the change by themselves, usually about 15 seconds after your last change and never more than 2 minutes after the first. A bulk edit or an import is handled in one go once it settles.

This refreshes the products each live quiz can recommend, and the bundle discount. It never publishes quiz edits you haven’t published. On top of that, stock is checked when each shopper reaches their results, so sold-out products don’t show.

Changes to the quiz itself (questions, matching, results, design, translations) need Publish changes.

#Unpublish

Unpublish (at the top of the editor, for live quizzes) asks Take this quiz off your store? Shoppers stop seeing it right away. It stays in Teacup Quiz as a draft, so you can publish it again any time. You see Quiz taken off your store. It’s a draft now.

  • An A/B test running on it ends.
  • If it was your main quiz, blocks without a Quiz ID show your next live quiz.
  • A block whose Quiz ID names this quiz shows nothing to shoppers until you publish the quiz again. It doesn’t switch to your main quiz.

#Duplicate

Duplicate makes a draft copy and opens it: questions, matching, results, design, your own CSS and translations. The name gets “(copy)” and the Quiz ID gets -copy (then -copy2, and so on). You see Copy made. It’s a draft until you publish it.

#Delete

Delete asks Delete this quiz? A live quiz comes off your store right away, and its A/B test version, if it has one, is deleted too. You see Quiz deleted and go back to Home. A running A/B test ends, and if it was your main quiz, the role passes to another live quiz.

#Status badges

BadgeMeaning
DraftNot published. Shoppers can’t see it.
PublishedLive, and the live version matches your latest edits.
Unpublished changesLive, but changed since. Shoppers still see the last published version.
Main quizShown by blocks with no Quiz ID.

On Home, Unpublished changes compares your saved quiz with the live one. In the editor it also counts edits you haven’t saved yet. The Analytics list says Live where Home and the editor say Published.
