Getting around the editor
A tour of the quiz editor: the steps list, the canvas where you edit in place, the toolbar and quick actions, undo, saving, and the buttons at the top.
#The editor at a glance
Open a quiz from Home by clicking its card or Edit. At the top are the quiz’s name and its buttons, then a status section, then the builder: a toolbar and three areas.
| Area | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Quiz steps (left) | Every part of the quiz, in order. Click one to edit it. |
| Canvas (middle) | Every screen of the quiz, drawn exactly as shoppers see it. Click any text to change it. |
| Settings (right) | Every setting of the step you picked. |
Pick a step in the list or click a screen on the canvas, and the settings switch to that step. The canvas scrolls to the screen when it’s out of view.
On smaller screens
- Wide screens (1,100 px and wider): steps, canvas and settings side by side.
- Medium screens (760 to 1,099 px): steps and settings side by side, with the canvas below them at full width.
- Phones and narrow windows: the steps list, then the settings, then the canvas, one under the other.
#The Quiz steps list
The list on the left has three groups. Under each step, a short line tells you its state.
| Group | Step | The line under it |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Design | The theme, such as Minimal or Your store. See Design. |
| Look | Languages | One language, or how many the quiz has. See Languages. |
| Quiz | Welcome | The welcome heading, or Off. |
| Quiz | Each question, numbered | How many answers it has and, once shoppers take the quiz, how many of them answer it (last 30 days), e.g. 4 answers · 62% answer. The question is named by its short label, or else its text. |
| Quiz | Off, Optional or Required. | |
| Quiz | Results | Best 3 matches, Best match, Routine of 4, or 5 result pages. |
| Before you publish | Check every answer | Run it before you publish, 2 to fix, 3 to look at or All good. |
- Drag a question up or down the list to reorder it.
- Add question adds a new question right after the one you’re on.
- A red dot on a step means a problem to fix; an amber dot means something to look at. See Check every answer.
The editor opens on Welcome when the quiz has a welcome screen, and on question 1 when it doesn’t.
#The canvas: edit right on the quiz
In Edit mode the canvas stacks every screen: the welcome screen, each question, the email step and the results. Each one is the real storefront quiz in your design, with your products. A small header names the screen (WELCOME, QUESTION 2, EMAIL, RESULTS) and adds badges: Pick up to 3 on a question that takes several answers, Branches on one that jumps, and an amber No products chosen yet (or No result chosen yet) when none of its answers steer the results. A small amber dot marks each answer that doesn’t bring up products (or count toward a result) yet.
Click any text to edit it
- Click a heading, a question, an answer, a description, a button label or the email step’s checkbox text, and type. Hover first to see what it is: a small label says Question, Why you ask, Answer and so on.
- Press Enter, or click somewhere else, to keep the change. Press Escape to cancel it.
- Empty spots show a faded hint you can click: Write a heading, Add a line about what shoppers get, Type your question, Add why you ask (optional), Add a description (hover an answer to see it) and Add a line about why to leave an email.
Hover an answer for its tools
- The grip: drag the answer to another place in the question.
- Choose products, or Edit products once it has rules, opens the answer’s dialog, as in the question’s settings. In a quiz with result pages it reads Choose result, or how many results it points to, such as 2 results.
- Duplicate copies the answer with everything on it: its matching or points, its photo and its jump.
- Delete removes it. A question keeps at least one answer.
A yellow dot on an answer means it doesn’t steer the results yet. The dashed + Add answer tile adds an answer and opens it for typing. Hover the gap between two screens to show + Add question.
Ghost cards
When the quiz has no welcome screen, a dashed card at the top offers + Add a welcome screen. When it has no email step, a dashed card after the last question offers + Add an email step. Click either one to add it with ready-made text you can change.
The RESULTS screen shows what a shopper gets by picking the first answer of every question. In a quiz with result pages, its header says so: showing the first answers’ result. To see other results, use Play.
#The toolbar
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Undo and redo arrows | Take back your last change, or redo it. Hover to see the shortcut. |
| The health pill | The live result of Check every answer. Click it to open the full report. |
| Edit and Play | Edit shows every screen for editing. Play runs the quiz from the start, like a shopper. |
| Phone and Desktop | The width of the canvas and of Play. |
| Quick actions | Opens the command search (see below). Hidden on screens 760 px wide or narrower; the shortcut still works. |
What the health pill says
| Pill | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Check every answer | A new blank quiz you haven’t touched yet. Its problems stay hidden until you edit it, open the check or try to publish. |
| Checking every answer… | The check is running. |
| 2 to fix before publishing (red) | The number of errors. Most errors stop Publish. |
| 3 to look at (amber) | No errors, and this many warnings. |
| Every answer works (green) | No errors and no warnings. |
What each problem means is in Check every answer.
Play
Play runs the quiz from the first screen at phone or desktop width. Answer like a shopper: branches, the email step and the results all work. Nothing is saved: no email is stored and nothing goes into a cart. Buttons say what they would do instead, for example “Preview: on your store this adds all 3 products to the cart, with 10% off.”
#Quick actions (⌘ K)
Press ⌘ K on a Mac or Ctrl K on Windows anywhere in the editor, or click Quick actions. Type a few words, move with ↑ and ↓, press Enter to run a command and Esc to close.
| Group | Commands |
|---|---|
| Add | Add a question (after the one you’re on). Add an answer to this question, which adds an answer named “New answer”. |
| Question | Delete this question. |
| Screens | Add a welcome screen or Remove the welcome screen. Add an email step or Turn off the email step. |
| Go to | Design, Welcome screen, each question (e.g. Question 2 · Skin type), Email step, Results and Check every answer. |
| Look | Theme: Minimal, Theme: Editorial, Theme: Soft, Theme: Noir; Colors: White, Colors: Blush, Colors: Sage, Colors: Sand, Colors: Mist, Colors: Lilac, Colors: Midnight; and Theme: Your store, which opens Design, where you match your store’s look. |
| View | Play the quiz like a shopper or Back to editing. Show on desktop or Show on phone. |
| History | Undo and Redo. |
The commands for an answer or a question only appear while a question is open. Search also finds related words: “klaviyo” finds Add an email step, “bundle” finds Results, “test” finds Check every answer and “fonts” finds Design.
#Undo and redo
- Undo: ⌘ Z on a Mac, Ctrl Z on Windows. Redo: ⌘ Shift Z or Ctrl Shift Z; Ctrl Y works too.
- Up to 100 steps back. Changes made within half a second of each other, like typing a word, count as one step.
- While you’re typing in a field, the shortcuts undo your typing in that field instead.
- Undo covers your edits in the editor: texts, questions, answers, matching, results and design.
#Saving your work
The editor doesn’t save by itself. As soon as you change something, Shopify’s save bar appears at the top of the admin with Save and Discard.
- Save keeps your changes as a draft and says Quiz saved. Shoppers still see the published version.
- Discard goes back to the last saved version.
- Publish (or Publish changes) saves and publishes in one step.
Only publishing changes what shoppers see. See Publishing.
“This quiz was changed somewhere else”
If the quiz was saved in another tab, or by someone else, after you opened it, saving or publishing stops with “This quiz was changed somewhere else (another tab?). Reload the page to get the latest version.” Reloading shows the latest saved version and drops the changes you haven’t saved in this tab, so copy any text you want to keep first.
#The status section and the header buttons
The status section above the builder shows where the quiz stands:
- Draft: “Shoppers can’t see this quiz until you publish it.”
- Published: when, with how many products, and “Product changes in your store reach the live quiz automatically.”
- Unpublished changes: the editor differs from the live quiz, counting changes you haven’t saved yet. “Shoppers still see the version from then.”
- Main quiz: the quiz any Teacup Quiz block with an empty Quiz ID shows.
Once the quiz is published, a line sums up the last 30 days, e.g. “Last 30 days: 120 started · 84 finished (70%) · 31 added to cart · 12 orders · $1,240.00 in sales”, or “No shopper activity in the last 30 days yet.” Under it are Put it on your store and, when it isn’t your main quiz yet, Make main quiz.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Publish, Publish changes or Publish again | Saves and publishes. The label says whether it’s the first time, there are changes, or nothing changed since the last publish. |
| Analytics | This quiz’s analytics. |
| A/B test | The A/B tests page with this quiz picked. See A/B tests. |
| View store | Your store, in a new tab. |
| Duplicate | A draft copy of the last saved version, with “(copy)” after its name. |
| Unpublish | Takes the quiz off your store; it stays here as a draft. Asks first. |
| Delete | Deletes the quiz for good. Asks first. |
Quizzes at the top left goes back to Home. A test version made for an A/B test shows Start the test instead of Publish until its test runs, and has no A/B test, Duplicate or Unpublish.
