What shoppers see
Your quiz from a shopper’s side, screen by screen: the welcome screen, questions, the email step, results, sold-out products, phones and saved progress.
#From the first screen to the results
A shopper goes through these screens in order: the welcome screen (if it’s on), the questions, the email step (if it’s on), a short “analyzing” screen, then their results. The first screen arrives with the page itself, so it shows at once, and a tap made before the quiz has fully loaded isn’t lost.
Above every screen are the quiz name (unless Show quiz title is off in a section; popups always show it) and a progress line. With 12 questions or fewer, the line has a segment per question; longer quizzes get a single bar. “2 of 5” counts the longest path still possible, so with branching the quiz never promises fewer questions than may come.
#The welcome screen
Your heading, your text and your button (Start the quiz unless you wrote another). Next to the button: “Takes about 1 min”, worked out at 15 seconds per question, rounded down, and at least 1 minute.
Under it, three quick facts, unless Show quick facts is off:
| Results | The facts, for example |
|---|---|
| Best matches | “4 quick questions”, “120 products compared for you”, “3 picks, made for you” |
| A routine | “4 quick questions”, “120 products compared for you”, “4 step routine, made for you” |
| Result pages | “4 quick questions”, “6 possible matches”, “1 match, made for you” |
The products number is how many products the quiz can recommend. With branching, the questions number is the longest path, and it can change slightly once the page has finished loading.
#Questions
- One-answer questions move on by themselves a moment after the tap.
- Multi-choice questions say Choose up to 3 (or Choose up to 3, or skip, or Choose one) and have a Continue button. On a question shoppers can skip, the button reads Skip until they pick something. Picking past the limit shows You can choose up to 3. Unselect one to pick another.
- ← Back appears from the second question on.
- Four or more text answers sit in two columns on wider screens. With pictures, answers become cards, circles or squares: see Design.
- On a keyboard, letter keys pick answers: A for the first, B for the second, and so on. Enter continues a multi-choice question.
Answering in their own words
If a question has Shoppers can answer in their own words on (Starter and up), shoppers see Or tell us in your own words under the answers, a box (A few words about what you need, up to 300 characters) and Find my answer. They see Reading what you wrote…, then for example We picked Oily, Breakouts for you. On a one-answer question the quiz picks and moves on; on a multi-choice question it ticks the answers and the shopper presses Continue. When nothing fits: We couldn’t match that. Pick an answer instead.
What shoppers type isn’t stored. Each shopper can try 12 times in 10 minutes. When your plan’s daily allowance is used up, the box disappears after the next try, until the next day (UTC).
#The email step
After the last question, if you turned it on: your heading and text, a Your email field, Phone (optional) if you ask for it, and your marketing checkbox, unticked. The buttons are ← Back, Skip (when the email is optional) and Show my results.
- A mistyped address shows Please enter a valid email address.
- Shoppers who skip still get their results.
- The email step shows once per visit. After Change answers or Retake the quiz, shoppers go straight to their results.
Then a short “analyzing” moment: Finding your matches… (or Building your routine…, or Finding your match… for result pages), with three bars that fill one after another, like “Reading your answers”, “Comparing 120 of 120 products” and “Picking your best matches”. It takes about 4 seconds. It’s skipped when the page reloads on the results, and for shoppers who turn on reduced motion. If the results can’t load, for example on a lost connection: We couldn’t load your results, with Try again and Retake the quiz.
#Results: products that fit
The heading is Your matches, or Your routine for a routine. If the shopper’s first question with a short label was answered with an answer that has Good for text, the heading uses it, like “Your routine for oily skin”. Under it: their answers to questions with a short label (“Skin type Oily · Focus Breakouts”), or else Based on with the answers that steered the picks.
Each product card has:
- The photo, which changes with the variant picked.
- For routines, the step, like “Step 1 · Cleanser”, with its number on the photo.
- The product name, linking to the product page.
- Good for tags: why it fits, from the answers that brought it up.
- Option pickers for size, shade and so on: buttons for up to 8 values, a dropdown for more. Sold-out values are crossed out, or marked “Sold out” in a dropdown. The first variant for sale is picked to start.
- For products with selling plans: One-time purchase or Subscribe (Subscribe · save 10%), and a Delivery choice when there are several. Subscribe is preselected only when the product is sold by subscription only.
- The price (the one-time price crossed out next to a subscription price) and Add to cart, which reads Sold out when the picked variant can’t be bought.
With two or more products, the Add all bar floats at the bottom while shoppers scroll: All your matches or The whole routine (with “· save 10%” when there’s a bundle discount), the total, and Add all to cart (or Add all · save 10%). It’s disabled while any picked variant is sold out.
After adding, the button reads Added or Added to cart, with Added to your cart. or All 3 are in your cart, with 10% off. and a View cart link that opens your theme’s cart drawer if it has one. If the cart refuses, for example because of a quantity limit, its own message shows.
#Results: result pages
Shoppers see Your match (or “Your match: Glass Skin” when the page has its own heading), the heading, your text, and Because you said with the answers that gave it points. Then the page’s picture, its products (a single product or bundle gets a larger card), an Add all bar (“Everything for Glass Skin”) and the landing page button (Learn more unless you wrote another).
Also a great fit shows close runners-up as small cards: a picture, the name (linking to their landing page or product), the price and Add to cart, which adds all of that result’s products at once, without the bundle discount.
With Skip the results and open the landing page, shoppers see “Your match: Glass Skin” and Taking you to your results…, then the landing page opens.
With Show the results on a page of your store, shoppers see Taking you to your results… and go to that page, where its Teacup Quiz section shows their results. That section must show the same quiz: your main quiz, or the same Quiz ID.
#No match and sold-out products
Every recommended product is checked with your store the moment the results show. Products that are sold out, unpublished or deleted are dropped and the next best take their place, so shoppers only see what they can buy. On result pages, products that can’t be bought are left out quietly. A product with some sold-out variants still shows, with those options marked.
If nothing fits a shopper’s answers and you have no fallback collection, or it has nothing to show, they see We couldn’t find a match right now and “Some products may be sold out. Try different answers.”, with Retake the quiz. With a fallback collection set under If nothing fits their answers, they see products from it instead. Shoppers who pick no preference see products from that collection too. On result-page quizzes, answers that give no points to any result show your first result page.
See When shoppers get no match to find and fix these paths.
#Change answers, Retake and saved progress
| Link on the results | What it does |
|---|---|
| Change answers | Goes back to the first question with every answer still picked, so the shopper can change one and move through quickly. |
| Retake the quiz | Clears every answer and starts again at the first question. It counts as a new start. |
Progress is kept in the browser tab. A shopper who reloads, or browses elsewhere and comes back within an hour of their last step, picks up where they left off, even on another page with the same quiz. A new tab, another device or a later visit starts fresh, and results aren’t saved for later.
#Phones, popups and accessibility
- The quiz adapts to the width of its space, from a narrow column to a full page.
- Popups fill the whole screen on phones (600 pixels wide or less). Shoppers close them with ×, with Escape, or by clicking outside on larger screens. The page behind doesn’t scroll while a popup is open, and a closed popup opens again where the shopper left it.
- Focus moves to each new screen’s heading, so screen readers announce it. Answers announce their letter shortcut, the progress line reads “Question 2 of 5”, messages like Added to your cart. are read out, and crossed-out prices read “Was” and “Now”.
- Shoppers who turn on reduced motion get no animations.
- Right-to-left languages are laid out right to left.
