Questions and answers
Every setting of a question: the text, answers and photos, one or several answers, skipping, short labels for results and emails, answers in shoppers’ own words, and the answer-rate badge.
#Adding and arranging questions
Click a question in Quiz steps, or its screen on the canvas, to open its settings.
- Add one with Add question under the steps list, + Add question between two screens on the canvas, or Quick actions → Add a question. It comes right after the question you’re on, with two empty answers.
- Reorder by dragging it in the steps list, or with Move question up and Move question down at the top of its settings.
- Duplicate question copies it right below, with “(copy)” after its text, including every answer and its matching.
- Delete question removes it at once, without asking. It’s turned off when the quiz has only one question. Undo brings a deleted question back.
Shoppers answer the questions in the order of the list, starting with the first, unless you send them elsewhere with Branching.
#The question and why you ask
| Field | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Question | What shoppers answer, such as “How will you mostly use it?” Ask about them, not about your catalog: “How does your skin feel by midday?” works better than “Skin type”. |
| Why you ask (optional) | “One line under the question. Shoppers answer more readily when they know why.” For example: “So we can show you the right size.” For a pregnancy question: “Some ingredients, like retinol, aren’t recommended then, so we leave them out.” |
A question without text gets an amber warning: “Question 3 has no text.”
#Answers
Above the answers, the editor reminds you how many shoppers can pick: Shoppers pick one · drag to reorder or Shoppers pick up to 3 · drag to reorder. Each answer has:
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Label | What shoppers tap, e.g. “Oily”. An empty label gets a warning. |
| Description | An optional line under the label that helps shoppers recognize themselves, e.g. “Shiny by midday, visible pores”. |
| Chips | A summary of what the answer does (see below). |
| Choose products or Edit products | Chooses the products the answer brings up: see Matching. In a quiz with result pages: Choose result or Edit result, see Result pages. |
| Photo | Adds a picture (see below). |
| Trash | Removes the answer. A question keeps at least one. |
- Drag the handle at the left of an answer to reorder it, or drag the answer itself on the canvas.
- Add answer adds an empty answer at the end.
- To copy an answer with its matching, hover it on the canvas and click Duplicate.
Reading the chips
| Chip | Means |
|---|---|
| Recommends: oily | Recommend more of the products tagged oily. |
| Less of: fragrance | Recommend less. |
| Only: Under $50 | Only recommend. |
| Never: retinol | Never recommend. |
| Glass Skin +2 | Result pages: the answer points to Glass Skin, Strongly (+2). |
| Then: question 4, Then: results | The answer jumps. |
| Doesn’t change the recommendations yet, Doesn’t count toward a result yet | Nothing is set. |
Chips don’t show how strongly an answer recommends. Open the answer to see it.
On your store, four or more answers without pictures show in two columns when there’s room. Shoppers can also press the letter keys A, B, C… to pick.
#Photos and picture cards
Photo opens a menu:
- From your Files: Shopify’s file picker, with the images in Content → Files.
- From a product: the first photo of a product you pick.
- Remove photo, when the answer has one.
As soon as one answer has a photo, the whole question turns into picture cards, and answers without a photo show an empty frame. So give every answer of the question a photo.
The cards take the shape of the first answer’s picture, between portrait (2:3) and landscape (3:2). A picture of another shape shows whole inside its card instead of being cut. In Design, Picture answers switches between Cards, Circles and Squares, and Show whole pictures, under More options, suits icons and cut-outs.
When a photo won’t load
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Your Shopify admin can’t open Files here yet. Use a product photo instead.” | Use From a product, or try again after your Shopify admin updates. |
| “That image isn’t ready yet. Try again in a moment.” | Shopify is still processing a file you just uploaded. Wait a few seconds and pick it again. |
| “Couldn’t load that image. Please try again.” | Pick it again. |
#More options
Click More options under the answers for the settings you need less often.
One answer or several
- Shoppers pick → One answer: tapping an answer moves on by itself, after a short moment that shows the pick.
- Shoppers pick → One or more answers: shoppers tap several answers, then Continue. The hint reads “Choose up to 3”.
- At most (several answers only): from 1 to the number of answers. A shopper who tries to pick more sees “You can choose up to 3. Unselect one to pick another.”
- Shoppers can skip this question (several answers only): the button reads Skip while nothing is picked, and the hint becomes “Choose up to 3, or skip”. A skipped question adds no matching.
Products must fit every answer picked
This switch shows on a several-answers question when at least one of its answers has an Only recommend rule. It decides what happens when a shopper picks more than one such answer:
| Switch | A shopper picks Vegan and Gluten-free | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Off (default) | Products that fit either one: vegan, or gluten-free. | Preferences, like the colors Black or Navy. |
| On | Only products that are both vegan and gluten-free. | Needs, like diets and allergies. |
Short label on the results page
A name of a word or two for the question, such as “Skin type” or “Budget”. It’s used in several places:
- On the results page, as a profile line: “Skin type Oily · Focus Breakouts, Redness”. (This is for quizzes with Products that fit; it replaces the “Based on” answers.)
- In the heading of the results, through the first question that has a short label: “Your routine for oily skin”. See Good for.
- With emails: only questions with a short label are saved with a shopper’s email and sent on: to the Emails page, Shopify Flow, Omnisend, and Klaviyo, where each becomes a profile property such as “Teacup Quiz Skin type”.
- In the editor, as the question’s name in the steps list and on the canvas.
After this question
Where shoppers go next: Continue to the next question, Go to 4. … or Show the results. See Branching.
#Shoppers can answer in their own words
Turn on Shoppers can answer in their own words and shoppers see “Or tell us in your own words” under the answers, with a box (“A few words about what you need”) and Find my answer. AI reads what they wrote and picks the answers that fit.
- A shopper writes, for example, “shiny by lunch but flaky around my nose” (up to 300 characters).
- They see “Reading what you wrote…”.
- On a one-answer question, the best answer is picked, the shopper sees “We picked Combination for you.”, and the quiz moves on.
- On a several-answers question, the answers that fit are selected (up to At most). The shopper can change them, then clicks Continue.
- When nothing fits: “We couldn’t match that. Pick an answer instead.”
The AI reads the question and each answer’s label, description and Why these products fit text, so clear descriptions lead to better picks. What shoppers write is used for that one answer and never stored. In Play, the box only says “Preview: on your store, AI picks the answers that fit what the shopper wrote.”
On the Free plan the switch is turned off, with “Under the answers, AI picks the answers that fit what shoppers write. Starter and up.” and See plans. After a downgrade, a question that had it on reads “Off on your store: your plan doesn’t include it. Starter and up.” The box disappears from your store right away, and comes back as soon as you’re on Starter or up again.
#The answer-rate badge
Once shoppers take the published quiz, each question shows a badge such as 62% answer it at the top of its settings, and 62% answer in the steps list. It’s the share of shoppers who started the quiz in the last 30 days and answered this question.
- A big drop from one question to the next shows where shoppers leave. Shorten or reword that question.
- On a quiz with branching, a question only some paths reach has a lower share by design.
