Results: what shoppers get

The results of a quiz with products that fit: best matches or a routine, how many products, what happens when nothing fits, which products the quiz uses, and the settings under More options: sold-out products, tags to leave out and showing results on a page of your store.

#Two kinds of results

Click Results in Quiz steps. At the top, choose what shoppers get:

ChoiceWhat shoppers getGood for
Products that fit“Each shopper sees the products that match their answers.” Their best matches, or a routine. Most stores: the best products for each shopper out of many.
A personal result“Each shopper gets a result like ‘The Weekend Explorer’, with its own text and products.”Personality quizzes, or a few products or bundles that are each a result.

This article is about Products that fit. For the other, see Result pages. You can switch any time; each keeps its own settings.

Under the choice come Products shown and Products in this quiz. At the bottom, More options holds the settings you need less often: Recommend sold-out products, Never recommend products tagged and Show the results on a page of your store. It’s closed at first. While it is, a line under it lists what’s set there, such as “never: sample, gift-card · results on /pages/your-results”.

#A routine or best matches

Under Products shown, Shoppers get has two choices:

ChoiceWhat it doesExamples
Their best matches“The products that fit their answers best, best first.”Finding one product, gifts.
A routine: one product for each step“Like a cleanser, a serum and a cream: the best fit for each step.”Skincare: cleanser, serum, moisturizer. Coffee: beans, grinder, mug. Pets: food, treats, a toy.

Best matches

How many products sets how many shoppers see: 1 to 12, 3 by default. Shoppers see fewer when fewer products fit.

Routine steps

  • Step 1, Step 2…: the step’s name, e.g. “Cleanser”. Shoppers see it on the product card: “Step 1 · Cleanser”.
  • Products: what can fill the step, set like a rule: a tag, a collection, a product type, a brand (vendor), a price range or one product. Under a tag, product type or brand, you see how many products have it.
  • How many: how many products the step shows, 1 to 5.
  • Under it, the step’s problem if it has one, or “No products fit this step yet.” when no product in your store fits it.
  • The arrow moves a step up; the trash removes it (a routine keeps at least one step).

Add step adds an empty step. Pick what fills it before you publish: an empty tag is an error that stops Publish.

How steps are filled

  • Each step takes its best-scoring products, by the answers’ matching, among the products it points at. A step is filled even when no answer pushed any of its products up; it then takes the first in store order.
  • A product used in an earlier step isn’t used again, so put the most specific steps first.
  • When none of a step’s products can be shown (sold out, or ruled out by Only and Never rules), the step is left out for that shopper. Check every answer warns: “Serum” is empty for 12 ways to answer.
  • Only when every step is empty does the backup show.
  • Cards are numbered in order on the results page, so a step that shows 2 products takes two numbers: “Step 1 · Cleanser”, “Step 2 · Cleanser”, “Step 3 · Serum”.

#If nothing fits their answers

If nothing fits their answers, under Products shown, decides what shoppers see when their answers match nothing:

  • Show a “no match” message: “We couldn’t find a match right now”, “Some products may be sold out. Try different answers.” and Retake the quiz.
  • Show products from Bestsellers (24), or any other collection: its best products for the shopper, up to How many products. In a routine, where that setting is hidden, it keeps its last value (3 by default).

The backup still obeys every Only recommend and Never recommend rule on the shopper’s path. If no product fits the Only rules, the shopper gets the message, not the collection.

Shoppers who pick no preference

Some shoppers’ answers carry no Recommend more, Recommend less or Only recommend rule (a Never recommend rule is fine), for example “Not sure” or “No preference” everywhere. With best matches, they see the collection’s products first, as the note under the setting says: “Shoppers who pick no preference see these too.” When it has too few they can be shown, your first products in store order top it up. Without a collection, the note reads “Shoppers who pick no preference see your first products.”: the first ones in store order. Their Never recommend rules still hold. In a routine, they get the first product of each step instead, and the note isn’t shown.

Answers with only Recommend less or Only recommend rules aren’t “no preference”: they keep their normal matching.

These shoppers don’t count as a no match in your analytics: their answers asked for nothing in particular.

#Recommend sold-out products

The switch is under More options at the bottom of Results. It says “Off: shoppers only see products they can buy right now.” Here is exactly what it changes:

Off (default)On
Which products the quiz considersProducts that track inventory and have none left (0 or less across all variants) are left out, and so are products not on the Online Store.Every active product inside Products in this quiz counts, whatever its stock or sales channel. The count under Products it can recommend goes up.
On your storeEach recommended product is checked live; anything Shopify reports as unavailable is dropped and the next best fills in.The same live check: products shoppers can’t buy are still dropped.

So the switch never puts a product with a Sold out button on the results. It matters for products with no stock that Shopify still sells, for example with Continue selling when out of stock on, such as preorders and backorders. Off, those products are left out of the quiz; on, they can be recommended.

#Products in this quiz

The Products in this quiz section decides which products the quiz may recommend at all. It counts them for you: “120 products can be recommended.”

Products it can recommendKeeps
All productsEvery product that qualifies (see below).
Only some collectionsProducts in any of the collections you add. Choosing it adds your first collection; remove chips, or add more with Add a collection….
Only products I pickThe products you pick in Shopify’s product picker, which opens right away. Chips show the first 12, then “and 30 more”. Change products edits the list.
Only products with a tagProducts with any of the tags you add under Products with any of these tags.
Only some product typesProducts of any of the types you add.
Only some brands (vendors)Products from any of the brands you add under Vendors.

One way of narrowing applies at a time: choosing another clears the previous one. To add a tag, type and click a suggestion, or click Add “summer” for a value no product has yet. A store without collections sees “Your store has no collections yet. Make one in Shopify (Products → Collections), then pick it here.”

Left out of this quiz

Products you leave out with Leave it out of this quiz in Check every answer are listed here, under Left out of this quiz. They’re out of this quiz only: its results, routine steps and backup. Put back returns a product to the quiz.

Never recommend products tagged

Under More options at the bottom of Results, tags you add to Never recommend products tagged keep products out of the quiz everywhere: the results, the routine steps and the backup. Until you add one, the hint says “For example gift cards and samples.” Gift cards aren’t left out by themselves, so tag them (gift-card, for example) and add the tag here.

Which products can be recommended

  • Active: not a draft and not archived.
  • Available on the Online Store sales channel.
  • In stock: inventory tracked and above 0, or not tracked at all. (Unless Recommend sold-out products is on.)
  • Inside Products it can recommend.
  • Not under Left out of this quiz.
  • Not tagged with a tag under Never recommend products tagged.

Changes to your products (new products, prices, tags, stock) reach the published quiz by themselves. Changes to the quiz need Publish changes. See Publishing.

#Show the results on a page of your store

Results normally appear right in the quiz. Show the results on a page of your store, under More options at the bottom of Results, sends shoppers to one of your store’s pages instead, where the results show between that page’s own sections, such as reviews, a guarantee or an offer. It works for both kinds of results. As its hint says: “Leave empty to show the results in the quiz. With a page, add the Teacup Quiz section to that page in your theme editor.”

  1. In Shopify, create the page: Online Store → Pages → Add page, for example “Your results”, at /pages/your-results.
  2. Open that page in the theme editor, click Add section or Add block, and pick Teacup Quiz under Apps. Leave its Quiz ID empty if this is your main quiz; otherwise paste this quiz’s ID. Add your other sections around it and click Save.
  3. In the quiz’s Results step, open More options, type the page’s address under Show the results on a page of your store, e.g. /pages/your-results, and publish.

After the last question (and the email step, if any), shoppers see “Taking you to your results…” and land on the page, with their answers in the address. The Teacup Quiz section there shows their results.

Use an address on your store such as /pages/your-results. Text that isn’t an address shows “Use a page address like /pages/your-results.” In the editor’s canvas and in Play, results always show inside the quiz.

#What shoppers see

  • A heading: “Your matches” or “Your routine”, or “Your routine for oily skin” when the first short-labeled question has Good for text.
  • A profile line from your short labels (“Skin type Oily · Focus Breakouts”), or else “Based on” and the answers that pushed products up.
  • A card per product: photo, step name, product name (a link to its page), Good for tags, option pickers, subscription choices when the product has them, price and Add to cart.
  • With 2 or more products, an Add all bar: “All your matches” or “The whole routine”, the total, and Add all to cart. With a bundle discount, Add all · save 10%.
  • Change answers and Retake the quiz.
