Collecting emails
What happens to the emails shoppers leave in your quiz: the Emails page, Export CSV, your Shopify customers and their tags, and which emails are kept.
#Where each email goes
When a quiz has the email step on, shoppers leave their email (and, if you ask, a phone number) just before their results. Each email Teacup Quiz accepts goes to all of these at once:
- The Emails page in Teacup Quiz, with the shopper’s answers. Every plan.
- Your Shopify customers, tagged with the quiz, and with the result on result-page quizzes. Every plan.
- The Teacup quiz completed trigger in Shopify Flow and Shopify Email. Every plan. See Shopify Flow and Shopify Email.
- Klaviyo and Omnisend, when you connect them. Starter, Growth and Plus. See Klaviyo and Omnisend.
#Turn on the email step
- Open the quiz in the editor and click Email in the steps list, or the + Add an email step card on the canvas.
- Under Ask shoppers for their email, pick Yes, and they can skip it or Yes, to see their results.
- Check the Heading, the Text (optional) and the Marketing checkbox text. Leave the checkbox text empty if you don’t want a marketing box at all.
- Turn on Also ask for a phone number (optional for shoppers) if you want phone numbers too.
- Click Publish changes. Shoppers see the step from then on.
Every setting of the step, and when to make it optional or required, is in The email step.
#The Emails page
Emails in the app menu lists the emails shoppers left, newest first. It shows the newest 250, and the line under the table, “Showing the newest 250 of …”, tells you how many there are in all. Export CSV always has every one.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| The email, in lower case, with the phone number under it when the shopper gave one. | |
| Marketing | Subscribed when the shopper ticked your marketing box. No when they didn’t, or the step had no box. |
| Answers | The shopper’s profile answers, like “Skin type: Oily · Concern: Breakouts”. See Answers that come with each email. |
| Quiz | The quiz the email came from. A quiz you’ve since deleted shows its quiz ID instead. |
| Date | When the shopper left it, in your computer’s time zone. |
Until the first email arrives, the page reads No emails yet, with a reminder to turn on the email step.
#Export CSV
Click Export CSV at the top of the Emails page. You get every email, newest first, in a file named teacup-emails-{date}.csv, with these columns:
| Column | What it holds |
|---|---|
| The shopper’s email. | |
| Phone | The phone number as the shopper typed it, or empty. |
| Email marketing | yes if they ticked the marketing box, no if not. |
| Quiz | The quiz’s name. |
| Date | When they left it, in UTC, like 2026-10-09T14:32:05.000Z. |
| One column per profile answer | For example Skin type and Concern, up to 60 columns. Empty when the shopper’s quiz didn’t ask that question. |
If the download fails, the app shows “Couldn’t download the emails. Please try again.”
#What goes to your Shopify customers
Every accepted email is added to Customers in your Shopify admin, on every plan, so you can find, segment and email these shoppers with any Shopify tool.
New shoppers
- A new customer is created with the email.
- The phone number is added only when it’s in international format, with a + and the country code, like
+1 415 555 0134. If another customer already has that number, the customer is created without it.
Tags
- “Teacup Quiz” on everyone who left an email in any quiz.
- “Teacup: {quiz name}”, for example “Teacup: Skin quiz”.
- “Teacup result: {result name}” on quizzes with result pages, for example “Teacup result: Glass Skin”. A shopper who takes the same quiz again and gets another result keeps only the new one: the quiz’s other result tags are removed.
Commas in a quiz or result name become spaces, because Shopify uses commas to separate tags. A shopper who takes two quizzes gets the tags of both.
Email marketing
When the shopper ticks your marketing box, the customer is set to subscribed to email marketing (single opt-in). That happens only for new customers and for customers who never chose. Someone who unsubscribed, or who still has to confirm a subscription, stays as they are.
#Which emails are kept
- The quiz must be published with its email step, as shoppers see it on your store.
- One email per quiz run. A shopper who retakes the quiz in the same visit isn’t asked again.
- An exact repeat is dropped: the same email, quiz and answers again within 24 hours isn’t saved, added to your customers or sent to Flow, Klaviyo or Omnisend a second time. Another quiz, or the same quiz answered differently, counts as new, so you always have the shopper’s latest picks. Your tests opened from the app’s buttons are the exception (below).
- Shoppers who turned down analytics in your cookie banner can still leave their email. Their runs aren’t recorded, so Teacup Quiz accepts at most 10 of these emails an hour from one connection, and 1,000 an hour for your store.
- Open your store and Try it on your store open your store with a private code for your store, valid that day and the next. Emails left in a test opened this way skip the 24-hour rule: you can leave the same address again and again to check Klaviyo, Omnisend or Flow, up to 30 test emails an hour for your store.
- A
?teacup_test=1you type yourself still makes a test run, but the usual rules apply: an exact repeat (same address, quiz and answers) once every 24 hours, and, since test runs aren’t recorded, at most 10 emails an hour from your connection.
#Answers that come with each email
Each email carries the shopper’s profile: their answers to the questions you gave a Short label on the results page (under More options on the question). A question labelled “Skin type” answered with “Oily” becomes “Skin type: Oily”.
- Questions without a short label are left out. Leave it empty for personal questions you don’t want stored with the email.
- Answers are in the quiz’s own language, even when the shopper took a translation.
- Several answers to one question are joined with commas.
- The same profile goes to Klaviyo, Omnisend and Shopify Flow.
#Questions
- Do shoppers who skip the email step show up here?
- No. Only shoppers who leave an email appear on the Emails page. Every shopper who answers the first question appears in the quiz’s responses: see Responses.
- Can I delete an email?
- There’s no delete button. When a shopper asks your store to erase their data, Shopify passes the request on and Teacup Quiz deletes their emails. See Privacy and your data.
- How long are emails kept?
- 24 months, then they’re deleted automatically. Export CSV to keep a copy for longer.
- An email is on the Emails page but not in Klaviyo. Why?
- Klaviyo needs Starter or up and a working connection. Work through Klaviyo isn’t receiving emails.
