Testing the quiz on your store
Take your quiz like a shopper without skewing your numbers: the test link, what isn’t counted, and how to check the cart, the bundle discount and your email flows end to end.
#Play in the editor, or your real store
Play in the editor’s toolbar is the quickest check while you edit: “Answer like a shopper would. Nothing is saved or added to a cart.” Before you launch, and after big changes, test on your store too, because some things only happen there.
| Play in the editor | Your store | |
|---|---|---|
| Which version | What’s in the editor now, saved or not | The published version |
| Fonts | Your store fonts come from Google Fonts; others fall back | Your theme’s own fonts |
| Add to cart | A note: “Preview: on your store this adds…” | Adds to the real cart |
| Answers in their own words | A note; AI isn’t asked | AI picks the answers |
| Subscriptions | Not shown | Shown for products with selling plans |
| Landing pages that skip the results | A note | Shoppers go to the page |
| Language | Your main language | The shopper’s language |
| Counted in analytics | Never | Not with the test link (below) |
#Open your store in test mode
Two buttons open your store in test mode: Open your store in the setup guide on Home (it opens your home page, or a product or collection page when the quiz is only on those), and Try it on your store in Put it on your store, which also opens the quiz’s popup if the page has one. They go through a short address on your store (/apps/teacup/test) that marks the browser tab as your test and carries a private code for your store, valid that day and the next. With it, you can leave the same email again and again while you test: see Emails you leave are real. For a later test, click the button again.
You can also add ?teacup_test=1 to any address on your store that shows the quiz, for example https://yourstore.com/pages/skin-quiz?teacup_test=1. That makes a test too, but without the code, so the usual rules for emails apply.
Test mode lasts for the rest of that browser tab, across pages and reloads. Close the tab to end it. A tab you open yourself is a normal visit again.
#What isn’t counted
These runs never count in your analytics or toward your plan’s completed quizzes:
- Runs in a tab opened with
?teacup_test. - Runs in Shopify’s theme editor.
- Runs on a theme preview: any theme that isn’t your live theme.
- Play in the quiz editor.
- Shoppers who decline analytics in your store’s cookie banner.
Orders you place after a test run aren’t credited to the quiz either, and test runs send no quiz events to Shopify custom pixels, Google Analytics, Meta or TikTok. See How counting works.
#Emails you leave are real
- In a test opened with Open your store or Try it on your store, you can leave the same address again and again, to check Klaviyo, Omnisend or Flow each time. Up to 30 test emails an hour are taken for your store.
- In a test you opened with a
?teacup_test=1you typed yourself, the usual rules apply: an exact repeat (the same address, quiz and answers) is taken once per 24 hours for your store, and up to 10 emails an hour from your connection. Leave the same address with the same answers again within a day and it’s silently ignored: not saved and not sent anywhere. Pick different answers, or use a fresh address for each test there, likeyou+test1@yourstore.comif your email provider supports + addresses. - Tick the marketing checkbox only if you want the test address subscribed.
- The Emails page has no delete button. You can delete the test customer in your Shopify admin’s customers.
#Test the cart and the bundle discount
- Open the quiz with the test link and finish it.
- On a product card, pick another size or option and check that the price and the photo follow.
- Click Add all to cart (or Add all · save 10% with a bundle discount). The button turns to Added to cart and a View cart link appears.
- Open the cart and go to checkout. With a bundle discount, each product shows Bundle 10% off.
- Remove one product and check that the discount goes: it needs every product from that Add all in the cart.
- Leave checkout without paying, or place a test order if your store has a test payment method.
Products added one by one, or from Also a great fit, don’t get the bundle discount, and only one of each product is discounted. See The bundle discount.
#Test your email flows end to end
- Turn on the email step in the quiz and publish.
- Connect your email tool: Klaviyo or Omnisend, or build a Shopify Flow workflow that starts with Teacup quiz completed.
- Open your store with Open your store or Try it on your store, take the quiz and leave an email address you own. In a test opened this way you can use the same address every time. Tick the marketing box if your flow needs consent.
- Check it arrived: on the Emails page in Teacup Quiz, in your Shopify customers, then in your email tool.
- Wait for the flow’s email in your inbox, and check the products and links in it.
#A launch checklist
- Check every answer is green in the editor: the toolbar pill reads Every answer works.
- The quiz shows where you placed it, on a phone and on a computer.
- Your most common answers lead to products that make sense.
- Add all puts everything in the cart, with the discount if you set one.
- Your test email reaches your email tool, and the flow sends.
- Translations read well in each language.
- Then share links without
?teacup_test. Your first real shoppers show up in Analytics.
