The email step
Ask for an email, and a phone number if you like, before the results: optional or required, every field, the marketing checkbox, where the emails go, and what to set up before you promise a discount.
#What the email step does
The email step is a screen between the last question and the results. Shoppers leave their email (and a phone number, if you ask), then see their results. Each email is saved with the shopper’s answers and added to your Shopify customers and connected email tools.
Turn it on
- Click Email in Quiz steps.
- Under Ask shoppers for their email, pick Yes, and they can skip it or Yes, to see their results.
- Publish. Only a published email step collects emails.
You can also click + Add an email step on the canvas, or use Quick actions → Add an email step. Both add an email step shoppers can skip.
#Optional or required
| Choice | Shoppers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| No | Go straight from the last question to their results. | No emails. |
| Yes, and they can skip it | See Skip next to Show my results. Shoppers who skip still see their results. | More shoppers finish; fewer emails. |
| Yes, to see their results | Must leave an email to see their results. There’s no Skip. | More emails; some shoppers leave instead. |
In the editor’s words: “Optional skips get more finished quizzes; required gets more emails.” Your analytics show how many shoppers leave at the email step under Where shoppers leave. If many do, try the optional step, or compare both with an A/B test.
#Every field
| Field | Starts as | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | “Where should we send your results?” | Keep it: clearing it turns the step off (see below). |
| Text (optional) | “Get your picks by email, so you have them when you need them.” | One line on why to leave an email, e.g. “Get your routine by email, plus 10% off your first order.” |
| Marketing checkbox | “Email me tips and offers. Unsubscribe anytime.” | The checkbox’s text. Empty: no checkbox. |
| Also ask for a phone number (optional for shoppers) | Off | Adds a Phone (optional) field. |
You can also click the heading, the text and the checkbox text on the EMAIL screen of the canvas and type there.
Shoppers see a Your email field, the phone field if you asked, the checkbox if it has text, ← Back, Skip (optional step only) and Show my results. An address that doesn’t look right gets “Please enter a valid email address.”
#The marketing checkbox
- It starts unticked. Shoppers tick it themselves.
- Only shoppers who tick it are subscribed: to email marketing in Shopify, to the Klaviyo list you choose in Integrations, and in Omnisend. A Shopify customer who unsubscribed before, or hasn’t confirmed yet, stays as they were.
- Shoppers who don’t tick it are still saved and added to your Shopify customers, just not subscribed.
- Empty the field to remove the checkbox: then nobody is subscribed.
- Teacup Quiz never unsubscribes anyone and never changes an existing customer’s details.
On the Emails page, the Marketing column reads Subscribed when the shopper ticked the box.
#Phone numbers
The phone field is optional for shoppers. “Saved and sent to Klaviyo with the profile. Teacup Quiz never subscribes anyone to SMS.” A number goes to Klaviyo and onto the Shopify customer only in international format, with + and the country code (e.g. +1 555 010 2345). Other phone numbers are kept on the Emails page only, and text that doesn’t look like a phone number is left out. A number another Shopify customer already has isn’t added to the new customer.
#Where the emails go
| Where | What arrives | Plans |
|---|---|---|
| The Emails page in Teacup Quiz | The email, phone, marketing tick, quiz, date and answers. Export CSV downloads them all. | Every plan |
| Shopify customers | A new customer, or the existing one with that email, tagged “Teacup Quiz” and “Teacup: Skin quiz” (the quiz’s name), plus “Teacup result: Glass Skin” on result-page quizzes. | Every plan |
| Shopify Flow | The trigger “Teacup quiz completed”, which can also start Shopify Email automations. | Every plan |
| Klaviyo | A profile and the event “Teacup Quiz Completed”, with the answers and the recommended products. | Starter and up |
| Omnisend | A contact and the event “Teacup quiz completed”. | Starter and up |

Good to know
- Each quiz run takes one email.
- An exact repeat is dropped: the same address, quiz and answers again within 24 hours isn’t saved again or sent to Shopify, Flow, Klaviyo or Omnisend. Another quiz, or the same quiz answered differently, counts as new. Your tests opened from the app’s buttons are the exception (next point).
- Your own test runs (opened with Open your store or Try it on your store, with
?teacup_test=1, or in the theme editor) don’t count in your analytics, but emails you leave there are real: saved, added to your customers and sent to your email tools. Use an address you own. In a test opened with Open your store or Try it on your store, you can leave the same address again and again, up to 30 test emails an hour; in other test runs, mind the 24-hour rule when you test twice. - In the editor’s Play, nothing is sent.
- Shoppers see the email step once per visit: it doesn’t come back if they click Retake the quiz or Change answers.
- Tracking pixels only hear that an email was left, never the email itself. See Tracking events.
#Promising a discount or the results by email
Teacup Quiz doesn’t email shoppers and doesn’t create discount codes. If your text promises “your routine by email” or “10% off your first order”, set up the email that delivers it. The editor reminds you: “If you promise a discount or the results by email, set up the Klaviyo flow that sends it (event ‘Teacup Quiz Completed’).”
- Connect Klaviyo in Integrations (Starter and up).
- Press Send a test event, so the trigger shows up in Klaviyo.
- In Klaviyo, open Flows → Create flow → Build your own, and pick the trigger “Teacup Quiz Completed”.
- Add an email with the routine (Integrations has a ready email block to copy) and your discount code, then set the flow to Live.
On the Free plan, use a Shopify Flow or Shopify Email automation started by “Teacup quiz completed” instead. See Klaviyo and Shopify Flow and Shopify Email.
