Creating a quiz

Every choice in the Create a quiz dialog: the four kinds of quiz, which products it uses, the AI draft, and starting from a blank quiz.

#Where to start

Open the Create a quiz dialog from any of these:

  • Create quiz at the top of Home.
  • The New quiz card at the end of Your quizzes.
  • Create quiz in the setup guide.

There’s no limit on how many quizzes you make, on any plan.

#Pick what it should do

ChoiceWhat shoppers getGood for
Find the right productA few questions about what they need, then the products that fit. Most stores: skincare, coffee, pet food, equipment.
Find the perfect giftQuestions about who it’s for, the occasion, the budget and what they’re into.Gift shops and the holiday season.
Build a routine or setOne product per step, like a skincare routine, an outfit or a starter kit.Products that are used together.
What’s your type?Shoppers find out their type, like “The Weekend Explorer”, and get its products.Personality-style quizzes and bundles.

The kind only decides how the first draft is built. Everything can be changed in the editor later, including switching between Products that fit and A personal result in Results.

#Pick the products it uses

Many products (the usual way)

For Find the right product, Find the perfect gift and Build a routine or set, choose under Which products can it recommend?:

  • All products: every product that’s for sale on your online store.
  • Collections: products in the collections you pick.
  • Products I pick: up to 250 products from Shopify’s product picker.
  • Products with these tags, Product types or Vendors: products that have any of the values you pick.

Collections, tags, types and vendors show as chips to click. With more than 14 options a search field appears. You can pick up to 50.

A few products I pick

What’s your type? always works this way, and Find the right product can too: switch it from Many products to A few products I pick. Click Pick products and choose 2 to 12 products, sets or bundles. Each one becomes a result page of its own. The dialog says “Each one gets its own result: a product, a set or a bundle. Pick 2 to 12.” (for What’s your type?: “Every type gets its own result page with these. Pick 2 to 12.”)

#Tell the AI what to know, and name it

Anything Teacup Quiz should know? (optional) is read by the AI before it writes. Useful things to say:

  • Who each product is for: “The Dew Serum is for dry skin, the Clear Gel for oily skin.”
  • What the quiz should ask about: “Ask about roast and brewing method.”
  • The tone or theme: “Fun coffee personalities, named after brewing styles.”

Quiz name (optional): shoppers see it, small, above the quiz. Leave it empty and the AI names it. You can rename it any time in the editor’s Welcome step.

#Draft with AI

While you have AI quizzes left, the line above the buttons says “Teacup Quiz writes the questions and picks the products for each answer. You can change everything after.” On Free it adds “This is your free AI quiz.”, and on a paid plan how many are left, like “17 AI quizzes left this month.” Click Create quiz. Teacup Quiz reads your products and writes as many questions as it takes to tell them apart: 3 to 5 for a small or simple store, up to 8 to 10 for a big one where shoppers differ in many ways, with 2 to 8 answers each, plus the matching that connects answers to products. Want a set number? Say so in Anything Teacup Quiz should know?, like “About 10 questions, a full skin consultation” (at most 12). You see “Writing your quiz. This usually takes under a minute, a little longer for big stores.”, then the editor opens.

For Many products, the AI reads your tags, product types, brands, collections and prices, plus a short description and the options (like Size or Color) of up to 80 products: all of them in a small store, or a spread across your catalog. It asks about what really sets your products apart for shoppers, such as how they’ll use it, their level, style, size, fit or taste, in the shopper’s words rather than your store’s categories.

  • When tags, types and collections don’t capture a difference, an answer can point straight at specific products (This product rules).
  • On a one-answer question, some answers can jump to a later question or straight to the results (Then). A draft never jumps backwards. See Branching.
  • A drafted question is left out when it never changes the products shoppers get and taking its rules away changes nothing either, as long as at least two questions remain. A question whose answers all do the same thing, such as every answer Only recommend creams, stays, and so do questions that branch.
  • Find the perfect gift always gets a budget question built from your own prices, “What’s your budget?”. It’s the 3rd question, or the last one when the draft branches: then every jump to the results goes through it, so every shopper is asked their budget.
  • Build a routine or set gets routine steps (up to 6) and a 10% bundle discount.
  • What’s your type? gets one result page per product, with names the AI writes.

If the AI named tags or products your store doesn’t have, they’re left out, and the message after drafting says so: “It left out 2 tags or products your store doesn’t have.” If some picked products can’t be bought on your online store yet, it says that too.

#When there are no AI quizzes left

When you have no AI quiz left, a banner at the top of the Create a quiz dialog says so:

  • On Free, once your one AI quiz is used: “Your free AI quiz is used”, with “On a paid plan, Teacup Quiz writes every quiz for your products: the questions, the answers and the products for each one. You can also build this one yourself.”
  • On a paid plan, development stores included, once the month’s AI quizzes are used: “You’ve used this month’s AI quizzes”, with “You get more on Nov 1. A bigger plan drafts more each month. You can also build this one yourself.” The date is always the 1st of next month.

The four kinds of quiz show grayed out with a lock and can’t be picked, and the products choice is hidden. Under the quiz name, the dialog says “You start with one question. Add questions and choose the products for each answer in the editor.”

Click Build it myself for a blank quiz named New quiz, with one question with two empty answers. In the editor, add your questions and choose the products for each answer. See plans opens Plans, where a paid plan, or a bigger one, drafts more quizzes each month. On Free, See plans is the main button; on a paid plan, Build it myself is.

If AI isn’t available at all, which is rare, the banner says “AI quizzes aren’t available right now”, with “Build this one yourself, or try again later.”, and only Build it myself is shown.

Three messages can also appear after you click Create quiz. Then no quiz is made, and none of your AI quizzes is used:

  • After 10 AI quizzes in one hour: “You’ve made 10 AI quizzes this hour. Try again next hour, or click Build it myself.”
  • When the AI fails: “The AI couldn’t write your quiz this time, and it didn’t count. Please try again in a minute.”
  • When the quiz can’t be saved to your store: “Your quiz couldn’t be saved this time, and it didn’t count. Please try again in a minute.”

#Start from a blank quiz

To write every question yourself, click Build it myself in the dialog, or Start from a blank quiz on an empty Home page. You get one question with two empty answers, named New quiz, and the kind you picked is ignored. It never uses an AI quiz.

#Copy a quiz to another store

A quiz can move between stores as a file, for example from a test store to your live store, or from one of your brands to another.

  1. In the store that has the quiz, open it, click Download quiz file at the top, then the download link that appears. You get a .teacup-quiz.json file with the quiz as it is in the editor.
  2. In the other store, click Import quiz at the top of Home, then Choose file, and pick the file.
  3. The quiz opens in the editor as a draft, with its questions, results, look and translations. Check it, then publish.

Products and collections are found by their handle (the end of their address, like dry-skin-routine). If the store doesn’t have one, the quiz leaves it out and says which: pick another in the editor, then run Check every answer.

#The quiz ID

Every quiz gets an ID made from its first name, like skin-quiz. It never changes, even when you rename the quiz. You need it to show a quiz that isn’t your main quiz in a theme block; it’s shown in the Welcome step and in Put it on your store.
